How much is a Yamaha RX-V492 sound stereo receiver?

Question: My grandfather just gave me his old Yamaha RX-V492 (Sound stereo receiver) I don't know what year, but it's in great condition. Does anybody know about how much it's worth?

Answer: I believe that receiver is somewhere around 10 or 11 years old. I use to sell it when I was an A/V salesman. I think that was the last year Yamaha included the "V" (for video) in the name for its stereo receivers. It is somewhat the equivalent of the current RX 496 which has more current features. I have found, however, that the older Yamaha sometimes has better specifications (such as its damping factor). They often sacrificed quality from one year to another as they added features. I think the RX-V492 is conservatively rated at 75 watts per channel. For more info you can call Yamaha. A local Yamaha retailer can give you the number. Sadly, stereo receivers have lost much of their resale value these days since everyone is going to surround sound and the real serious 2 channel guys are buying the high end stuff. As an avid yardsaler I would expect to see a receiver like yours priced at about $20. Were it mine I would keep it though. You never know when it might be of use to you in some application and I'm sure it's still a great piece!
